Saturday Morning Garage Sale-ing!!

Yesterday, while I was running errands, Betsy and Dan (our good friends and neighbors) were spending their morning going to garage sales. They have just moved into the cutest house down the street and are in the market for some new furniture. They called and said they had found an old pie safe, since they knew we had been looking for one. I ended up going over to the sale, digging it out of this lady's garage, and buying it! It is definitely going to be a project to fix it up, but I think it will be well worth it! We are thinking about using it in our bedroom as a wardrobe for clothes and linens. We'll see - it will find it's place somewhere...
Since we have now purchased a pie safe, I figured I might as well educate myself about the history of this type of chest. In case you're interested - In the 19th century, the Pennsylvania Germans introduced a wooden cupboard with tiny holes used to store baked goods and to ventilate pies after they had been baked. Pie safes varied in size and shape but were widely used before the invention of ice boxes and refrigerators.

Here are some pictures of the pie safe. I will post pictures of the finished project in a few weeks!

This is the beautiful pie safe!
As you can see, it needs some work - but I think it has a lot of potential and character!

My wonderful and strong movers,
don't know what I'd do without them - for so many reasons :)

The interior shelving

This is a wonderful table that Betsy and Dan purchased.
It is the perfect fit for their beautiful living room!

We hope to go to more garage sales in the coming weekends!
I'll post more of our good finds!
Happy Sunday!

Why Pleasant Valley?

Some of our readers have been asking why our blog is named "Life In Pleasant Valley." We came up with this name from our cute little neighborhood that we love called, Pleasant Valley. This is where we are starting our life, so we decided to let our surroundings inspire our blog. :) You all are always welcome to come visit us in Pleasant Valley anytime!

Last night Whit and I ran some errands and stopped by Whitney and Keith's house to say hello. Keith is an incredible filmmaker, photographer, editor, designer and so much more. Check out his website: http://www.khvisuals.com/ I will be putting up some of his amazing photographs on the blog soon. As you can see, Whit got a little too excited about all of Keith's cool video equipment. :) Ahh...crazy Friday night! :)

The Magic of Candles...

One thing I always have in our house are candles.
I truly believe that the pleasant scent of a candle can do wonders to improve the aura of your home.
As soon as I get home from work, I put down my bag and light our candles on the coffee table. It has become part of my ritual - a way to start relaxing and enjoying the evening with Whit and Lollie after a long day at work. :)
Whenever someone is coming by for a visit, that is the first thing I do - make sure the candles are lit. I think it just adds a special warmth when you walk into a home with a candle burning.
It kind of distracts your guests from noticing whatever clutter is around or dust is in the corner, the hue of candlelight takes that all away...(or at least I pretend it does when my house is less than presentable) :)
My absolute favorite candles are the Tyler Candles. http://www.tylercandles.com/
The scents are perfectly subtle, not overpowering, very clean and fresh. My favorite scent in this line is "Tyler." I actually went to Katy's Hallmark today during lunch and picked up a few little Tyler Candles. I cannot wait to get home and enjoy them! :)

Welcome To Our Little Life in Pleasant Valley...

Greetings from Pleasant Valley!
Trust us, Whit and I are as shocked as you probably are that we are sitting in our living room, entering the world of blogging. We never thought we would become "bloggers." But as our first year of marriage is coming to an end, we have been looking back on what a wonderful, challenging year it has been - and looking forward to all of the adventures to come!
Whit and I wanted a way to document and share with our friends and family our journey of "growing up" together.
So bear with us as we try our best to figure out how to be "adults," own a house, raise a VERY "spirited" puppy (Lollie - you will get to know her throughout this blog, I'm sure) hopefully start a family one day, and enjoy and learn from whatever else life is going to throw our way...
So, here we go, this should be a fun and interesting ride!
Stay Tuned!
